Polyurethane (PU, PUR) is a polymer obtained through addition polimerisation. It melts easier than polyamide and therefore it is easier to process. Depending on the materials used, different polyurethanes are obtained, soft and flexible or hard and stiff. Their hardness ranges from 35 to 95 degree Shore. The hardness of polymer materials is determined using the Shore method complying to the PN-ISO 858 norm.

  • The properties of polyurethane:
  • Resistance to attrition, water, weather conditions,
  • Ability to absorb vibration,
  • Resistance to a number of chemicals, sulfur acid, fats, organic solvents,
  • Resistance to UV radiation, which makes polyurethane products more durable,
  • Not aging because of oxygen and ozone,
  • Resistance to temperatures ranging from -30C to 80C,
  • Being used as a layer protecting steel from corrosion and mechanical damage

The properties of polyurethane make it a very flexible material. Slowly but steadily, polyurethane is becoming the first choice of producers. It outweighs rubber when it comes to resistance to stretching, extending, squeezing and attrition. Polyurethane products are far more versatile, which causes them to be widely used and significantly durable. The hardness of polyurethane is evaluated with the use of the Shore scale, which is used to measure the hardness of some plastics.

GRAVITY CASTING

Liquid polyurethane obtained through mixing, by a machine or by hand, ingredients at a proper ratio is poured into a cast. A polyurethane item that is obtained this way is then seasoned. Manual casting enables customizing products and giving them any colour.

INJECTION MOULDING

When being injection moulded, polyurethane is melted at a high temperature and then injected into a mould under a high pressure. Next, a product obtained is shaped. The injection moulding method is frequently used to make a large number of polyurethane products since it ensures high precision. The high costs of making a mould make this method profitable as long as a large number of items is made.
